Old Stavanger

The charming, white-painted wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries are like a treasure trove of history.

White wooden houses in old Stavanger

Norway's best-preserved neighbourhood of wooden houses

Old Stavanger is a protected and preserved area. Here you will see 173 small, beautiful wooden houses. They are often timber-framed, and several houses have added arches (Stavangerarken) on the roof. This was to maximise the use of space - several tenants usually lived under one roof. The houses were typically homes for workers in the herring and canning industries.

Stavanger has received several awards for the preservation of Old Stavanger.

Things to do in Old Stavanger

Here you will find both the Stavanger Maritime Museum and IDDIS, the Norwegian Printing Museum and the Norwegian Canning Museum. Gamle Stavanger was designated by UNESCO as one of Norway's cities worthy of preservation in the 1975 Architectural Heritage Year.

Stavanger Guided City Walk

Stavanger

A guided city walk is an excellent way to explore Stavanger's many hidden treasures. In the company of the city's connoisseurs, we will prick up our ears and let ourselves be surprised by the stories that lurk in the city's streets.

Fargegaten

Fargegaten - Øvre Holmegate

This colourful street in Stavanger is a popular photo stop, not to mention a place to sit in one of the many cafés and contemplate life. Several niche shops can also be found on the street.

Why paint houses in bright colours?

Øvre Holmegate in Stavanger was a fairly forgotten and quiet street until enthusiasts wanted to breathe new life into the street and transform it into a lively, bustling shopping and cafe area. The driving force behind the transformation was one of the shopkeepers in the street, hairdresser Tom Kjørsvik, and together with artist Craig Flannagan they designed a vibrant colour scheme for the street.

Fargegaten is now one of the major attractions

Those who were initially sceptical about the project were quickly convinced, and all scepticism turned to enthusiasm when the street attracted new cafés, bars and shops, and not least more visitors.

the street of colours in Stavanger

One of the most photo-friendly streets you'll find in Stavanger

In the colourful street, you can be a typical tourist with a selfie stick or just find an empty seat at the nearest pub or café. You can get a shave a the barbershop, cut your hair, shop in niche boutiques, get a tattoo or buy beautiful clothes from a local brand with its own silk printing workshop.
