Stavanger – from street art to the art of pizza making!

The national TV personality Arne Hjeltnes shares with you his favourite Stavanger spots.

Ostehuset Øst

The eastern part of Stavanger is Stavanger’s hip alibi. This part of the city is typically where new eating places tend to pop up. Hanne and Tom, founders of Ostehuset, are known as active food entrepreneurs, and they were among the first to start up in the eastern part with Ostehuset Øst, an ideal location for a scrumptious breakfast or a tasty lunch. They further offer a supreme bakery with delicious dishes made from local ingredients.

Sirkus Renaa

Torill and Sven Erik Renaa are both a gift to this city. They constantly come up with new ideas to delight all lovers of good food. The latest shot in the arm is the multi-food house Sirkus Renaa, where delicious pastries, Italian ice cream, pizza and tempting sandwiches attract people all day long. In addition, it’s a suitable bike ride from the centre.

Bellies

«Keep the bellies happy», is what they say at Stavanger’s only full-vegan restaurant. My belly is certainly happy to hear this. Bellies offer gastronomy on a world-class level. Go for the tasting menu of seasonal products if you aim to show some real love for your belly. Suitable for lunch as well as dinner. And also, I have one word for you: Falafel! Bellies is located in Stavanger’s eastern quarter, also considered to be the trendy part of the city. In addition to local ingredients, the restaurant also only uses local sources for its interior and design.

Lervig Local

Pop just outside of the city centre - easily done on one of Stavanger’s many electric bikes - for instance to the area of Eiganes. New life has awakened in a little oasis near the royal residence/museum Ledaal. In this area is the cafeteria Matmagasinet, the bakery Kanelsnurren as well as the brewery Lervig’s very own brewery pub Lervig Local. At Lervig Local, they brew their small-batch beer. The hip and modern venue, decorated with illustrations from the Danish illustrator Nanna Guldbæk, also the designer of the Lervig beer labels, is a hot "hang-out", in a very nice neighbourhood.

Nuart

The street art festival Nuart is a major annual happening, and it has received great attention both nationally and internationally. The many footprints Nuart has left, you can enjoy when you walk around Stavanger. You can see street art both by famous artists as well as by newcomers in several different places in the city centre and other places in the region. Take a Nuart city walk while you're here.

Stavanger art museum

It is not a complete weekend without a trip to the museum. The Stavanger Art Museum is a real gem, where they began to collect art as early as the 19th century. Both the national treasures by the painter Lars Hertervig and the textile artist Frida Hansen are found at the museum, but also exciting new and temporary exhibitions. The museum is a short ride by electric bike from the centre, or by bus. The waffles at the museum cafe are also yummy.
