Villages and places

Sunndal

Sunndal is wild and beautiful, offering towering mountains and world-class waterfalls. These waterfalls are not just stunning to behold; they have also, along with hydropower, laid the foundation for Sunndal's modern industrial society. Sunndal is rightly called the "Kingdom of Waterfalls"!

Experience Norway’s most beautiful mountain valley, cascading waterfalls, roads tougher than Trollstigen and peaks raging 1800 metres above the fjord.

Natural hightlights

Sunndal is situated between two of Norway’s most famous mountain areas; Dovrefjell – Sunndalsfjella National Park and Trollheimen. Trollheimen, with the valley Innerdalen as a natural highlight, is a unique mountain area in many ways. Its location between different climatic zones creates distinctive geological conditions. The result is a great variety of landscapes and habitats, as well as a large diversity of plants and animals.

Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park is situated in the mountain area of Dovrefjell and the Sunndalen mountains, a natural meeting point of the counties Sør-Trøndelag, Møre og Romsdal and Oppland. Among the peaks, you will find more than 200 glaciers, lush mountain valleys, a myriad of mountain fishing lakes and several traces from earlier times. If you are lucky, you may also discover musk and wild reindeer in these areas.

The Kingdom of Waterfalls

Along the RV70 towards Oppdal, you can witness the grandeur of the waterfall Vinnu, which originates from Vinnubreen, the largest glacier in Møre og Romsdal. Vinnu, the 6th tallest waterfall in the world, cascades down the mountainside in several stages, with a total drop of approximately 860 meters. The spectacular Vinnutrappa staircase brings you face-to-face with the waterfall.

Continuing along the RV70, you'll encounter Åmotan at Gjøra, the gateway to Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park. Here, marvel at this unique natural phenomenon, where five rivers converge, creating a mesmerizing spectacle amidst steep cliffs, moraines, and a diverse botanical richness. It's no wonder Åmotan is often referred to as Norway's Niagara.

Flaggnuten i Sunndal

Sunndal

The start of the trip to Flaggnuten is in the city center of Sunndalsøra. Drive towards Ålvundeid and Kristiansund along highway 70. Tha parking lot is just before the tunnel, at the wharf in Sunndal. The tour starts at the roadside, next to the parking lot (Nebbfoten). Flaggnuten is Sunndals harshest and roughest short trip. The trail goes steeply up from the highway. After the first 5 to 10 minutes you'll arrive at a plateau overlooking the quay. From here it gets really steep and it is hung up the chain to get a grip while you're climbing. Take your time and make good hold with hands and feet, especially when the mountains are wet. From the first steep overhang is approximately five minutes walk up a steep path up to a new hinge chain. After this climb it calms down a little and although it is steep you are done with the roughest part of the route.  A good half hour walk will take you to a stream that tend to have good water levels in the spring and early summer. Once you have passed the creek you have to walk about 10-15 meters down the hill.  Just under ten minutes easy walk leads to the viewpoint.  Flaggnuten is reachable most of the year. The trail is steep, located on the sunny side and the local wind called "Litldalsvinden" takes so well that it rarely snow stays in the trail. The tour may well be extended. Approximately 250 meters before reaching Flaggnuten a trail goes off to Bjønnalauvet and up to Hovsnebba (1554 m)
